When your team is eliminated from the playoffs, it can sometimes be tough to stay motivated to play. Especially when there are three games left in the season.
That is the position, the Macomb High School football team is in. With a 1-5 overall record, the Bombers are officially eliminated from IHSA playoff contention. The incredibly tough schedule also doesn’t get any easier.
Tonight a historically talented Quincy Notre Dame team comes to town. QND is in the thick of the playoff hunt so Macomb head coach Tony Westen is preaching to his team that they play spoiler. That in itself is a solid reason to strap on the pads and play.
Another factor that could be both a positive and a negative is the fact that it is homecoming week for the Bombers. Westen wants to make sure that his team is not distracted and that they are locked in. Ultimately, his point is that you will eventually forget about all of the festivities and just remember if you won or lost the game.
Defending your home field on homecoming is another great motivating factor. We will just have to wait and see if that spark still shows up for the Bombers under the lights.
